# Projects — Ali Mustufa Shaikh ## Mirror A way to see the small changes. I started building Mirror after Bell’s palsy affected the right side of my face. I wanted a way to observe movement during my exercises and look back at changes over time. That was the starting point: make something that helped me see what was happening, session by session. ### Turn movement into something visible. Mirror uses MediaPipe to track more than 400 facial landmarks in real time. It compares movement across both sides of the face and records progress during exercises. The interface brings those observations together so a session is more than a number I have to remember. A time-lapse makes changes easier to review and discuss with my physiotherapist. ### Build around the daily session. The important decision was to connect live feedback with a record over time. An isolated score has limited context. A sequence of sessions gives me something to look back at. I used Claude during development and MediaPipe for the facial landmark tracking. The work began with my own routine, rather than a broad product brief. ### A public project, with a personal origin. Mirror is available to try, and its story has been covered by eight publications. Those articles document why I built it; they are not clinical validation. The project is a tool for observing facial movement, not a diagnosis or a promise of recovery. ## Fluent Present in English. An English-language presentation can reach people who would follow it more comfortably in another language. Fluent addresses that gap: a presenter speaks in English while the audience receives translated audio and text. The public beta brings translated audio, dual transcripts and synchronized slides into the same presentation experience. ### Keep the slide and the explanation together. Speech is only part of a technical talk. The slide often holds the diagram, example or context that makes the explanation useful. Fluent pairs the translation with the presentation. The beta accepts PDF, Google Slides and HTML decks, and offers both in-person and remote presentation modes. ### Two sides of the same room. For the presenter, the starting point is a presentation and its delivery mode. For the audience, the useful result is the ability to hear and read the explanation in another language while following the slides. That is the organizing idea of the product: keep the material together as it crosses a language boundary. ### Explore the public beta. Fluent is available as a public preview. The screenshot shows its public introduction; the live app contains the beta setup flow. Translation quality and audience outcomes are not measured in this case study. ## Passport The right phrase, with a little context. Passport, published as Phrase Passport, is a collection of city-specific phrase and cultural-etiquette guides. It brings useful language together with the context for using it. The starting point is a place. Each guide helps a traveler find phrases, understand local conventions and prepare for everyday conversations. ### Words work better with context. The Tokyo guide groups its material into phrases, culture, essentials and sources. Search supports English, local phrases and pronunciation, giving readers several ways to find what they need. The cultural material sits beside the language. Knowing which phrase to use matters; so does knowing how and when to use it. ### Make the guide useful beyond the first visit. The public guides include pronunciation audio and offline-ready content, with an option to save audio. These features support the practical setting of travel, where a connection may not always be available. The screenshot on this page shows the Tokyo guide as it appears in the public product. ### Explore a city. Passport is live. The guide directory is the starting point for browsing the available destinations.
